ABYSSINIAN  |  ORIGINS

The Abyssinian is a pure breed.

Although its origin still remains mysterious, the most popular theory of its origin is that of the Blue Nile located in Abyssinia. It is believed that he once sat enthroned with the lions on the steps of the Imperial Palace in Addis Ababa. It could be of the same descent as the sacred cat of Egypt. Other theories place its origin in India or Southeast Asia (Thailand).

Anyway, it belongs to the oldest breed of short-haired cat in the world.

As their coat resembled that of the hare, they were first called “Bunny cats” before naming them Abyssinians.

It was in 1929 that the Governing Council of the Fancy Cat brought the Abyssinian into the feline holy of holies.
